
Recreation Employment Corp
The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department’s Recreation Employment Corp (REC) is a work-based learning program employing youth between the ages of 14-17 years as employees/REC Mentees at neighborhood recreation facilities.
The mission of the REC program is to empower youth in our community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential. The program seeks to provide our mentees with a realistic overview of the recreation field and to outline potential career paths.
Program Information
REC Mentees will have opportunities to work at traditional recreation centers, regional recreation centers, secondary school site recreation centers, nature centers, and aquatic facilities.
1.) Duration: The program runs 40+ weeks between April-March. REC Mentees work a maximum of 10 hours during the academic year and 20 hours during the summer in accordance with labor laws.
2.) Focus: Through the structured job experience, youth will learn positive work skills and habits which will serve them throughout life.
3.) Supervision: Each REC Mentee is paired with a full-time professional recreation staff member who serves as their supervisor/mentor.
