The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is making it easier for neighbors to know when land near them is purchased and planned for future parks or nature preserves.

Residents are invited to join Mecklenburg County and the Second Ward High School Alumni Foundation on July 15 for Tiger Day, a free centennial celebration of Charlotte’s first high school for Black students.

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is helping local seniors and adults who receive disability income stay cool this summer by offering free box fans.

Independence Park, the first and oldest public park in Charlotte, has reopened to visitors following a nearly $6 million renovation project led by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. Residents are invited to a reopening event on June 29 to celebrate and enjoy the return of the park and its new features.

Mecklenburg County is responding to residents’ calls for greater access to skate parks by investing millions of dollars in these valued outdoor amenities over the next five years.

Mecklenburg County will celebrate Juneteenth by hosting “The Homage Exhibit” at Eastway Regional Recreation Center on June 15, from noon to 8 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Residents and visitors are invited to recognize and celebrate Mecklenburg County’s history, culture and growth at the Trail of History Festival on Saturday, May 20, at Midtown Park.
